Randy Hughes

Tax Planner

Henry Randolph Hughes, III (“Randy”), is not your typical accountant. Born into an equation-wrangling family of mathematicians, he is a numbers man. After graduating from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s in accounting, he worked for Big Four accounting firm KPMG, working on consulting and government contracts. After gaining further experience in real estate and health care accounting, he began gaining experience in tax accounting and preparation. He then went on to add professional bookkeeper and controller to his experience as he served in the hospitality industry for the next several years.

While in hospitality, Randy managed accounting departments for multi-million-dollar operations. As the controller for the Embassy Suites Hotel & Convention Center in Little Rock, Arkansas (John Q. Hammons, Inc), Randy managed the department responsible for handling and coding over $12 million in annual revenue while maintaining the tight operational controls required for compliance and accuracy. With a move back to the District of Columbia area, Randy assumed the position of controller for the Hotel Madera and Firefly Restaurant (Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants), joint ventures responsible for combined revenues exceeding $15 million per year. Randy’s responsibility with annual budget creation and monthly forecasting proved to be essential assets that contributed to the success of these businesses. Currently, he is the owner of Counting Pennies LLC, a 14-year-old tax and accounting firm that specializes in individual taxation and business bookkeeping.

However, far from the pocket-protector persona sometimes associated with accountants, Randy is best known by his colleagues and clients for his outgoing personality and volunteer work. In a business program held at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Randy won the award for best personality. Initially, Randy approached accounting as a means to underpin his volunteer work. Most of his international volunteer work centers on the development and progression of the sign-language culture, though he has also been known to heft a hammer on construction projects in the field. Though he found his feet in big business, those feet soon carried him, via a cacophony of international expeditions, to a more comfortable place… one where the accountant interacts directly with the clients, creating not only numerical and intellectual analysis, but also personal and long-lasting relationships.
